hygge at home

I have a new favorite word. “Hygge.” Here are a few different definitions that I found.

“The danish concept of coziness created when enjoying good food, drinks and fireside times with dear friends and family.” Pinterest quote from intertwinedblog.com

“A quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being” Oxford Dictionary.

“A form of everyday togetherness” Wikipedia.

“In essence, hygge means creating a warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with good people. The warm glow of candlelight is hygge. Friends and family – that’s hygge too. There’s nothing more hygge than sitting round a table, discussing the big and small things in life.” from visitdenmark.com

According to those definitions, the women in my family may not know it, but they have always been expert “hyggers.” My grandmas on both sides, my mom, and my sister all have a very strong sense of togetherness. They love to be with family and share words and laughter. They are so good at creating a cozy atmosphere of contentment in their homes with meaningful home decor, comfort foods, and a warm welcome to all. I have learned a lot from each of them and try to emulate the same feeling in my home. When photographing at-home sessions, I love to document the hygge that is unique to each family.

This post is of my sister and her husband in their first home last Fall. We took these a couple months before they moved. They really turned their house into a home and made it such a lovely happy place. My brother-in-law, Chris Stinson (who is a pretty big deal in the cabinetry world) did most of the design and interior work while my talented sister organized each beautiful collection. And here are a couple pics below that include my husband and little girl because we sure loved staying with them. They are in the process of building their next house and we can’t wait to see what they do.
